Free Printable – Alphabet Matching
Monday Freebie? It’s not such a catchy title but Mondays are horrible and we need some cheering up. So, I’m sharing my very first freebie! This free printable allows kids to practice tracing as well as matching. It will also help them improve their fine motor skills and prepare them for reading And writing.
Children with autism tend to have delayed fine motor skills. For a long time, cookie refused to do any kind of tracing or writing activity because he has trouble holding a pencil. He also hates making mistakes. If he doesn’t trace perfectly, it can quickly lead to an explosive meltdown. I had him practice tracing in the sand, in a salt tray, on his Magna Doodle and on his iPad. It helped him stay calm to know that he could easily erase and start over if he made a mistake. He is still a little perfectionist but I try to encourage him to laugh at his mistakes and move on (we’re working on it).
Most activity books do not interest him because the print is too small so I created this activity with LARGE bold letters. Since verbal instructions are difficult for him to understand, I made sure to give him a visual clue by making the line the same colour as the letters to help him understand what he needs to do. Lastly, and probably the most effective, is to model how to complete this task. I print an extra copy of the activity and I show him what I want him to do.
Some people use a “hand over hand” method. Basically putting my hand over his and guiding his hand to write. I don’t like to do this because I feel that it is not motivating or effective. I will only use this method if I need him finish a task that he’s trying to quit. I work hard on making learning fun. I want him to have so much fun that he can’t wait for school time. If I have to burst into song, so be it! Hope you like my free printable Alphabet Match Activity and don’t forget to have fun!
