I don’t know about you – but pencil sharpeners come and go in our homeschool. Most of them break and I think all of them make a huge mess and eat the pencils instead of sharpening them! Sarah found these intriguing pencil sharpeners online and we requested them to review. Sarah’s review is below. I will note my experience, which is a tad different – below her’s. If you want to check them out for yourself, click here.

I am a homeschooling mom who is sick of broken pencil leads, cheap pencils with lead falling out and expensive electric pencil sharpeners that won’t sharpen a pencil evenly! I have been on the hunt for a reasonably priced pencil sharpener for awhile now.
I heard about these pencil sharpeners on a homeschool forum and had to see for myself what all the hype was about. I found a video online that showed how this sharpener worked and was impressed by what I saw.
When I received my pencil sharpener in the mail it came in a box with no instructions. If I had not seen the video previously it probably would’ve taken me awhile to figure out how it works. (See Carrie’s experience below)
The design is unlike regular pencil sharpeners since you have to squeeze and pull out the piece that holds the pencil into place before inserting the pencil. Once you do that you crank the handle and the pencil goes into the sharpener until it can not be sharpened anymore then it stops. I love that! Usually my kids are sharpening, sharpening and sharpening until the motor on the electric one makes a grinding noise or the lead breaks off inside the sharpener!
It is very quiet and smooth, the container that holds the shavings is wonderful. It slides right out instead of having to pull something off, or pull it up or out like other sharpeners. There is zero mess with emptying it! This sharpener is solid and heavy duty. I can see it being dropped and nothing would happen to it. It is very high quality.
I received the Firehouse Red one and I love the bright splash of color it brings to my work area. This sharpener also came with a small mounting system where you can mount it to the edge of a desk or table. There were no instructions with this either and took us a minute to figure out what to do. I don’t care for the mounting system as it has fallen off a few times and doesn’t seem to have a tight enough fit. Instead I have it on a shelf above my desk and we just take it down when we need to use it and that works just fine. Other than that, this is the best pencil sharpener I have ever owned! It is bright and pretty and above all else it gets the job done!
I always throw out the cheap plastic wrapped pencils we get at holiday parties because the lead always falls out and we can never get them sharp or the plastic wraps around and clogs up the sharpener. With this sharpener we can use the cute, cheap pencils too. It sharpens them perfectly, with a nice, super sharp tip and no broken leads. We are very pleased with this product!
I pulled out Sarah’s pencil sharpener and took a peek. It was exactly the same…sigh. So I did what any mom with an older child does, I called for backup. I gave my daughter the pencil sharpener and told her it was supposed to be super cool and I apparently could not figure it out. She wasn’t surprised. I have to give this girl all of my devices and say “teach me!”
About 15 minutes later I walked into her bedroom and she had sharpened about a dozen pencils to an impressive and dangerous point. I asked her if it worked good and she said “Mom, this is the BEST pencil sharpener ever! I have never been able to sharpen this many pencils without breaking a lead, making a mess, or breaking the sharpener!”
So, my suggestion…either watch the video demonstrations or have an older child handy. It is a winner in this house – but my daughter has decided to keep it in her room.
