Not the fun kind of slide at the park, but the crummy kind of slide—a decline in reading ability that happens to many kids over the summer months.
Numerous studies show that kids who don’t read over summer vacation actually slip in reading ability by the time fall rolls around. As parents, we don’t need studies to tell us this! It’s just common sense, isn’t it? I mean, if your child plays the violin but stops playing for three months, he or she isn’t going to be as good as the child who continued to play the violin over the summer.
Reading practice doesn’t have to be boring.
Swap books with friends, cook from a recipe, play games that involve some reading. I designed most of the activity sheets in All About Reading to be reusable, too, so bringing them out during the summer is another good idea for keeping reading skills sharp. For each new reading concept taught, there’s an engaging activity to go with it.
