I used to be afraid of canning! I thought I would mess things up and ruin our food, that I would blow up my kitchen etc… Well, I got brave about 3 years ago and started to can fruits and vegetables from my garden and you pick farms, started making tomato sauce and salsa, jams, jellies and apple butters. The more I did it, the less afraid I was, and the more addicted to canning I got!
I would like to encourage you to start small. Water bath canning is what I started with, and I still haven’t ventured to the pressure cooker yet, but one day I will!
Canning is not just something your Grandma used to do. It is a great skill to learn and to pass on to this next generation. You never know when it will come in handy to pull food off of the shelves that you made and stored yourself! It’s also an inexpensive way to give personalized gift and to bless others.
To help out the beginners, I have created a link up list of canning resources, tips and ideas. I have also included some fun printables for your jars, some basic recipes as well as links to books that I used to teach myself how to can in the beginning. Enjoy and have fun in the kitchen!
Tips for Beginners:
Check with your local extension office! Most of them have a Cannery that you can use to can with a group, as well as inexpensive classes that can teach you how to can! Some of them even offer field trips!
