About our usage:
My 6th grade daughter has been using Teaching Textbooks for 3 years now. When we tested her with Brigance the previous two years she was lacking in several areas. I feel strongly that I need “something/someone” else to teach her math because I am not gifted in the area of mathematics (or patience), lol!
I stumbled upon Aleks Math when searching for TT alternatives. Reluctant but curious, I signed up for the free trial.
I had my daughter assessed at grade level according to the Sunshnie State Standards. I could care less about state standards or public shool guidelines, but I wanted to see where she was. Surprisingly, she had only mastered 66 areas of 324 total areas for 6th grade and was currently “learning” 29 topics. Since April 11th she has added a total of 62 topics in about 15 hours of instruction.
Thoughts from a 6th grader comparing Teaching Textbooks
She actually prefers Aleks to TT for a number of reasons. She likes the fact she can see her progress in the pie chart and that she can choose the topics she wants to work on for the day. I tell her to work for an hour and she doesn’t fuss about it or moan and groan. The thing I was most concerned about was the fact there was no “verbal” lesson or a teaching time. This is replaced with text and samples and step by step instruction. For some reason this is actually working BETTER for my daughter who had a tendency of daydreaming or losing focus during the lecture on Teaching Textbooks. She feels that she is learning much more with Aleks.
I was concerned that there was not enough review, but after digging into the parent area I discovered that you can create worksheets and quizzes by choosing the problems/categories or have them auto generate it based on what they have recently learned. You can select the number of problems as well as the start date. I was also worried about having printed records, but that was squashed when I discoverd you can print anything that you need to.
All in all, I am a bit nervous about chucking Teaching Textbooks, but if my daughter is happy and she is learning MORE and actually retaining it, then I think it is the route we are going to take for next year.
The monthly fee is $19.99, but if you do the math (no pun intended), it is equivalent to Teaching Textbooks or other comparable math curriculum in cost for a full school year. It is reliant on an Internet connection, so if you have a sketchy connection it can be frustrating.
For the first time in 3 years, at testing time (using Brigance), she tested AT grade level! That’s all I needed for confirmation! We are using it now for 7th grade, although she still has some topics to master for “6th grade level”. I love how it is a “work at your own pace” type of program!
