Learning About States and Capitals
Are you wondering when you should teach your kids how to learn the the states and capitals? Typically, learning the names of the state and their capital cities is taught in the 4th grade social studies, but kids in 2nd grade or 3rd grade are just as capable of learning the states and capitals.
It can be a daunting task since there are 50 states in the United States of America. Learning the names of the states and the capital names is a lot of information for children to take in. That’s over 100 names to remember.
Many homeschoolers like to take one to two years to learn them and incorporate them into a U.S. Geography study. You can learn a new state a week with unit studies and fun facts about the states you are studying. This will take one full calendar year or two school years to learn them all.
Ways to Memorize the Fifty States
- Songs are a fun way to memorize the states. Kids learn very well with songs that are repetitive and catchy. These 50 State Resources Songs and Videos will be a huge help.
- Work on learning one state and capital a week and review past states with new ones each week.
- Create a list of what you are learning and add to the states and capitals list each week until you have learned all of them.
- Memorize the names of the states while learning where they are located on a map. Using a USA map and writing in the states each week is a great way to memorize where they are located.
- Play board games such as The Scrambled States of America. Playing games is a fun way to reinforce what you are learning.
