Friday, June 26, 2015 is a day I will never forget. I was out of town for a wedding I was attending in Denver, Colorado. I woke up that morning, showered, and headed off to help set everything up at the church for the following day’s festivities. It wasn’t till later in the day as I was walking to the rehearsal dinner, that I heard the news: the Supreme Court of the United States had delivered the verdict we feared against biblical marriage.

Because of the significance of the Obergefell ruling on “gay marriage”, that day will stand out in the minds of many people for years to come. But I will remember that day for a different reason. Friday, June 26 was the day before my wedding.

What Obergefell Meant to Me

That evening before my wedding day, I began to understand more clearly the significance of the covenant my bride and I would make the next day. I realized that with our marriage vows we would affirm to the world not only our commitment to each other, but also our commitment to the very institutions of Christian marriage and the family. Not only that, we had the privilege and duty to exemplify this commitment for the rest of our lives, no matter what the Supreme Court might say.

What Obergefell Means to Homeschoolers

My name is Daniel Craig, I’m a homeschool graduate, and there are few things I’m more committed to than home education and discipleship. Now that I’m a husband, and hope soon to be a father, I long to pass on to any children the Lord gives me the incredible heritage of family discipleship that my parents gave me.

On June 27, when Megan and I made solemn vows to each other, we also made the promise of Psalm 78:4-7 to our parents: that we would not hide their instructions from our children, but rather teach them diligently so that our children might “set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.”

No doubt, this is a commitment we will have to fight harder to keep in a post-Obergefell America. Why? Because the June 26 blow to Christian marriage was really a blow to the heart of the Christian family. And as a result, every prerogative of the family institution is now at risk – from parental freedoms to medical freedoms to educational freedoms. And yes, that includes the freedom to homeschool as well.

What We Can Do

Friends, this is the time for us to prepare our hopeful, optimistic response to the growing opposition we face.

1. Get back to the basics.

I believe the next 20 years will reveal our true motivations for homeschooling. What started out as a movement rooted in conviction has morphed to a movement rooted – at least for many – in convenience.

If our freedom to homeschool is significantly challenged in the next 20 years, as I believe it will be, then now is the time to anchor our commitment to home education in biblical convictions that will stand the test of persecution.

2. Defend family and religious liberties.

As we look at the 2016 presidential elections, we must send a strong message to our leaders that family and religious liberties are of utmost importance.

We must also support courageous men and women who are already under attack for their faith, as well as the organization who defend them.

3. Don’t engage the battle for family freedoms alone.

Thanks to organizations like HSLDA and Heritage Defense, you don’t have to. When it comes time for your family freedoms to be defended, you’ll want an organization committed to doing just that on your side.
